The latest Vincent Cassel, 700s perverted monk / INTERVIEW
from the correspondent Gloria Satta
Translated by Mita
PARIS - Vincent Cassel’s latest metamorphosis: wrapped in a threadbare habit, his eyes haunted and speech delirious, he wrestles amongst the Church’s precepts and the torments of the flesh.
Mysticism and sin, vibrant prayers and wild sex in a eighteenth century Spanish friary till the confrontation with Satan itself: this is The Monk, the French actor’s new and long awaited movie. Directed by Dominik Moll and inspired by the gotich best seller by English writer Matthew G. Lewis, published in 1796 and followed by a big scandal, il film is about to be released in Italy by Nomad.
Cassel, 46, athletic body and chic grizzled hair, explains why he wanted to add the dark character of friar Ambrosio to his multiform career that turned him into one of the most wanted European actors and an international sex symbol. «Sex symbol?», laughs Vincent, «I just took my daughters to school…».
Why did you play The Monk?
«Because the movie is a gothic tale and I never played such a character before. What’s more, during my childhood I suffered a lot because of the religious education they gave me and I needed to warn the audience against the madness of such indoctrinations».
Why did you suffer?
«I went to a school run by priests. That’s a choice I would never make for my daughters Deva and Léonie! You can’t impose a creed on the ones who can’t understand it yet, conditioning irreversibly people’s life is absurd».
Are you an atheist?
«I think so, even though I have my own spirituality. Religion is a sum of all the fears and dream of mankind… and I’m opposed to rules, dogmas, impositions from above. My friar Ambrosio preaches against something he doesn’t know, and that’s the temptation of the flesh. But when he gets a bite of sex he realizes that he won’t be the same man any longer, so he falls into damnation…».
Aren’t extreme characters a bit too much appealing to you?
«All my characters, from the criminal in Eastern Promises to the ambiguous choreographer in Black Swan, are special and fascinating. Getting to play who I would never be in real life is amazing».
Will you ever work with your wife Monica Bellucci again?
«Yes, we’re going to act in a movie set during Rio’s Carnival, but it won’t happen till next year. In the meantime I acted in Danny Boyle’s Trance: it’s really entertaining, it’s a thriller set in the artistic world that also deals with hypnosis».
Is it true that you will go back to the set with Cronenberg?
«Of course, we’re going to shoot Eastern Promises 2 in Russia. It’s my third film with the Canadian master, he’s the oldest one I worked with…»
Why does the director of A Dangerous Method keep offering you these mental roles?
«According to him I’m so well balanced in real life that I can easily act mental on screen».
Do you also work in France?
«Of course I do. I’m going to do the remake of Berri’s “Un moment d’égarement” with Jean Dujardin who just won the Oscar with “The Artist”. It’s the story of two fathers that go on holiday with their respective adolescent daughters and one of them seduces his friend’s daughter».
What about the project of transposing “Una gioranta particolare” in theatre, with Monica?
«I’m afraid it’s going to remain at the stage of “project”. It’s better that way, I’m not made for theatre».
Are you serious?
«I know, I started off on the stage, following my father’s, Jean-Pierre, teachings. But theatre belongs to the past, it has something nostalgic about it and it makes me melancholy. I’m a man of cinema, which I think is a media far more suitable to our era. Doing theatre today is a bit anachronistic… it’s just like studying Latin».

E’ vero che tornerà sul set di Cronenberg?
«Certo, girerò in Russia La promessa dell’assassino 2.

In conclusion to this little study, I would like to talk about Mycroft as a modern day dandy for a while. There is a school of thought that canon Mycroft was, at least in part, based on Oscar Wilde. Arthur Conan Doyle met Wilde at a dinner at the Langham Hotel in the summer of 1889, after the publication of the first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet. Wilde was at the height of his creative powers, and this dinner ended with both writers receiving commissions for novels – Wilde’s for The Picture of Dorian Gray and Doyle’s for the next Holmes adventure, The Sign of Four. Although Mycroft wasn’t to make his first appearance, in The Greek Interpreter, until 1893, it’s likely that the idea of an indolent genius had more than a little bit of Oscar Wilde about it. Wilde was, of course, a famous dandy and aesthete, once declaring “One should either be a work of Art, or wear a work of Art.”
The BBC Sherlock costume department, in reinventing Mycroft as a dandy for the modern age, beautifully turned out at all times, has given a lovely nod to this bit of history.
Allow me to close with a costume wish list for series three:
After reading all of that I feel like my knowledge expanded considerably.
mitarashi8 replied to your post: i’m thinking of joining an s&m roleplay on tumblr…
Uuhhh I know what you’re talking about!!! Do iiit! Vincent must be yours and no-one else’s. He’s also somehow related to a character “played” by Viggo. You MUST do it!
I was looking at the blog though and it’s super sad but both the Cassel character and the Mortensen character are Masters and they can’t get together (as in it the rules it’s expressly forbidden for some reason) :o( sighs
I might still do it though because it looks rather fun.
also it’s pretty funny that his last name is ‘Sarkozi’, haha. That’s not a French name!
T-then the RULES ARE WRONG!!! çAç How can they deny the possibility of having characters “played” by them together?! It’s an act of sacrilege *sobs*
(I trust you will revolutionize the rules to your liking when you’ll become a strong enough and important enough character xD)
Omg I didn’t read that, pffff where did their imagination and will to research a bit run off to? They could have used ANY last name of any of the French characters he played, from Ocean’s Twelve to Black Swan…
Well have fun anyway =)
Oh and also the nickname “Franky” kind of gives me the chills ewww

This is Kirill çAç <3
How can anybody possibly not want to hug the hell out of him?
Aggghhh poor thing. So dramatic and sweet and nnggghi don’t know why but the fact that he actually has the courage to confront his father after he think nikolai’s dead and then still lets semyon beat the shit out of him is just heartbreaking and awful
kirill stop making me have feelings for you you’re an objectively awful person (or a victim of circumstance but)
It is! It shows how broken he is, how he can’t fully get a hold of his life and act accordingly, not until Semyon is out of the picture. And even after that he’ll probably just become submitted to Nikolai or anybody with a stronger character compared to his.
Happens to us all
